Welcome to Montague Township – County Living at its Best!

The Township of Montague, situated in the southeast corner of Lanark County on the beautiful Rideau Canal, is a wonderful community for seniors. Conveniently located between the Town of Smiths Falls and the City of Ottawa, Montague provides all the benefits of country living while still being close to the services, shopping and variety provided by city life.

The Township of Montague itself covers 283 square kilometres. The main settlement is the Village of Numogate, followed by the hamlets of Nolans Corners, Rosedale and Kilmarnock (Kilnarne). Three Rideau waterway lockstations are accessible in Montague Township and the north bank of the Rideau River is an ideal destination for tourists and residents alike.

When Montague was surveyed in the 1790's, continuing settlement started in the 1780's by the first Caucasian settler on the Rideau, Roger Stevens, it was intended to accommodate Loyalist and post-loyalist settlers. Montague's proximity to the military settlements of Perth, Beckwith and Richmond attracted additional settlers in the post-1812 decades; however, it was the mass Irish immigration during the 1830's through to the 1850's which gave the Township its distinctive ethnic character by mid-century. A wonderful book detailing the history of Township, Montague – a social history of an Irish Ontario township: 1783-1980 , was written by Glenn Lockwood and is available for purchase at the Township Office for those interested in uncovering the roots of Montague.
