Walkerton offers residents and visitors a wonderful selection of recreational activities. The canoe dock at Lobies Park is an excellent starting point for Saugeen River canoeists going on a day's paddle or the 82-km trip all the way to Southampton. The Walkerton Fishway on the Saugeen River at the Truax Dam is the only vertical-slot fishway east of the Rockies and allows rainbow trout to "climb" the dam and swim upstream to their spawning grounds ... an amazing sight. The Saugeen River Trail along the banks of the river is enjoyable all year round. Fly fishing the Saugeen, golf, tennis, lawn bowling, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing opportunities await!
Some spectacular Victorian homes and public buildings grace the County Town. The Courthouse and Jail were built in 1867-68 as befitting the new County Town status. The library, in the classical revival style, with beautiful woodwork, pillars and carvings was built in 1912 with a Carnegie Foundation grant. Victoria Jubilee Town Hall, which contains an impressive theatre upstairs and a bell tower, was built in 1897. The Architectural Conservancy of Ontario, South Bruce Grey Branch owns Victoria Jubilee Hall and continually brings in visiting artists and various live theatre productions.
Every summer, Walkerton's downtown architectural charm is complimented by extensive floral displays. In 2001, a Memorial Garden in front of the Bruce County Building was completed. Designed by the master gardener of the Stratford Festival gardens and planted by volunteers, including students from Woodstock, Stratford and the local high schools, it will be a lasting memorial to the people of Walkerton.
